Eco-town proposals "in wrong place", say Lib Dems

The Goverment's proposal for an Ecotown at Weston Otmoor was condemned by Liberal Democrat Councillor Dermot Roaf in a debate at County Hall on Tuesday 17 June.

He accepted that there is great housing need in Oxfordshire but there is already a large house-building programme in place. The proposed site is beside a congested motorway junction. The developers suggest building a railway station with frequent trains and trams to Oxford and Milton Keynes, but there is not the capacity at either end to receive these trains - nor the money to pay for them. Dermot said that developers have successfully persuaded the Labour Government to build ecotowns relying on the public acceptance of the need for housing and the need to mitigate global warming - even when these towns are on greenfield sites within the Green Belt.

The Council supported Dermot Roaf's motion.
