Many people will have seen that Oxfordshire County Council has announced plans to switch off some street lights in the name of cutting down on the county's carbon emissions and with a potential saving of £7,835 per year.

Did you know around ten per cent of pupils in Oxfordshire currently cycle to school? Recent figures suggest this is around five times greater than the national average. Helping to achieve this performance are the cycle training volunteers who teach road safety skills to year five and year six pupils across Oxfordshire.

Despite Oxfordshire's excellent recycling and composting rates, the amount of non-recyclable residual waste generated in future looks set to exceed the county's landfill allowance, resulting in severe financial penalties. A method of treating non-recyclable residual waste is therefore required, and was the subject of a fierce debate at the County Council on 8 January.

In Oxfordshire today we own more cars and drive further than ever before. In the last 20 years the number of cars owned by Oxfordshire residents has almost doubled to over 300,000. In addition, more than one in ten of Oxfordshire's workforce is now travelling more than 20miles to get to work. The result is that total traffic on Oxfordshire's roads has increased by two per cent per year since 1991. Forecasts show many sections of Oxfordshire's main roads will exceed capacity by 2011.
